Adkins was born to a young single mother who was raised in various working class London neighborhoods. As a young girl she was a fan of contemporary pop music and learned to play the guitar as well as the clarinet. She was introduced to Etta the mid-century rhythm and blues performer, during her teens and began to think about a career as musician. She was in an academy for visual and performing arts, which was funded by the federal government. A friend posted songs Adkins composed on Myspace. After her graduation, Adkins' music caught the attentions of record labels. She signed a deal in 2006 with XL Recordings.
